The Bolivian press is on alert after the cyber attack suffered by the web page of El Deber. There are already three media outlets that in the last months have been the target of these attacks. The other two are Correo del Sur and the Erbol network.
Hackers of El Deber published messages inciting hatred and blocked access to the content management system (CMS). “We condemn any deliberate action that affects or seeks to impede the work of the media,” said Jorge Carrasco, president of the National Press Association (ANP) and vice president of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) for Bolivia.
In Mexico, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador once again lashed out against the press with derogatory and stigmatizing comments during his morning conference. On this occasion, the president said that the Pulitzer Prizes are “a big farce” for having recognized the journalistic work of The New York Times and ProPublica.
On the other hand, the Press and Society Institute of Venezuela (IPYS Venezuela) condemned the accusations of the Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, against Ewald Scharfenberg and Roberto Deniz, journalists of Armando.Info. Saab assured that the journalists are “part of an extortive media structure” that seeks to discredit government officials, an accusation that was condemned and described as absurd by press freedom organizations.
In El Salvador, there is concern about the progress of a constitutional reform that, among other things, would regulate “the right to the conscience clause and professional secrecy in the exercise of freedom of expression”.
“In this context of neglect of freedom of the press, it is very likely that these types of reforms will be launched and that there will be no prior reflection in the Legislative Assembly”, commented the rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Association of Journalists of El Salvador (APES), Gabriel Labrador.
