Journalist Mario Castro has received text messages threatening him with the same fate as his colleague and friend, Aníbal Barrow, who was kidnapped, killed and dismembered in the city of San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
Journalist Mario Castro, host of the “El Látigo Contra La Corrupción” programme broadcast on Globo TV, has received text messages threatening him with the same fate as his colleague and friend, Aníbal Barrow, who was kidnapped, killed and dismembered in the city of San Pedro Sula, Cortés department.
“The same thing will happen to you as to your colleague” . . . “You are all a pack of rats . . . the tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down”, said one of the messages received on 4 July 2013, five days before police found Barrow, who had been kidnapped on 24 June.
Because of the severity of the threats, Castro spoke with the Secretary for Public Security, Arturo Corrales. Corrales sent a text message saying someone from his office would be in touch with Castro, but that person never contacted the journalist.
Castro also said that Corrales had not responded to his more recent requests for help.
In a separate incident, journalist Eduardo Maldonado, owner of the Hable Como Habla (HCH) channel, said publically, that during the broadcast of “Hable como Habla” on the evening of 9 July, he received a text message saying “assholes are killed for getting mixed up in things that have nothing to do with them, and you should be scared we’ll kill you too”.
This message was sent the same day that Barrow’s body was found.
