Sports reporter Ramón Rojas was the target of death threats aimed at him by Bernardo Alvarado, a president of the sports club Deporte Savio F.C., after he aired comments from a Deporte Savio coach saying the team’s poor showing was the fault of the administration.
Sports reporter Ramón Rojas was the target of death threats aimed at him by Bernardo Alvarado, a president of the sports club Deporte Savio F.C. The threats took place in Santa Rosa de Copán, in Copán department in western Honduras.
Rojas has been a journalist since 1986 and currently works as a Diario Tiempo correspondent and also on the Cinco Deportivo TV show broadcast on Corporación Televicentro’s Canal 5 on Sundays.
“Mr. Alvarado reacted badly to a news piece I did on Cinco Deportivo that aired on 2 February around 11:15 a.m. in which a Deporte Savio coach said the team’s poor showing was the administration’s fault,” Rojas told C-Libre.
“Mauro Reyes, the team’s coach, made this statement about the team’s performance and I only shared the information. But this is the reason that on the afternoon of the same day, just before the game between Deporte Savio and El Victoria, Bernardo Alvarado attacked me,” he added.
According to Rojas, Alvarado yelled at him in front of various people: “You don’t know what you’re doing, you don’t know I’m the president of Deporte Savio, I’m going to hurt you and I’m going to kill you, you son of a bitch.”
“He repeated his death threat on the football field at Sergio Antonio Reyes Stadium, while a group of journalists and photographers were interviewing people about their reactions to the game.”
Because of the threat, Rojas decided to file a report with the local authorities and said he will hold Bernardo Alvarado responsible for any attacks against him.
