(FLIP/IFEX) – FLIP condemns all threats and harassment against individuals who disseminate information related to human rights issues. The latest victim is Adriana Cuéllar, head of communications for the “José Alvear Restrepo” Lawyers’ Collective (Colectivo de Abogados “José Alvear Restrepo”).
Three threatening messages have been left on the answering machine at Cuéllar’s residence. The threats said, “Loud-mouthed bitch . . . you are going to die, together with your family. We are arranging it.” In addition, according to Cuéllar, unidentified individuals entered her house and stole documents related to her work on 25 November 2003.
Members of the “José Alvear Restrepo” Lawyers’ Collective have been victims of constant threats and harassment. As a result, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights has issued precautionary measures in favour of the collective’s members, indicating that the Colombian state must provide them with protection given the dangerous environment in they work.
FLIP considers it a duty of the government to ensure the security of individuals who carry out their information dissemination work within legitimate organisations. As such, the organisation asks the government to provide protection for Cuéllar.
