IAPA asks the authorities of Tucumán, Argentina to investigate a threat against journalists with the daily “La Gaceta”
Miami (30 March 2001) – The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today asked the government of Argentina to investigate the threats received by a journalist with the daily “La Gaceta”, in the north-western province of Tucumán.
The editorial secretary and principal columnist for the daily “La Gaceta” received a package that contained a grenade. The newspaper believes this act of intimidation is related to columns that he published about excesses in local political spending.
Danilo Arbilla, IAPA’s president and director of the weekly “Búsqueda”, in Montevideo, Uruguay, and Rafael Molina, president of the Press and Information Freedom Commission and director of “Ahora” magazine, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, concurred that “this incident constitutes a threat to freedom of expression and the press, which must be investigated.”
