IAPA CALLS FOR BRAZIL JOURNALIST MURDER TO BE SOLVED
MIAMI, Florida (July 27, 2006) – In a new action in its hemisphere-wide campaign to create public awareness of the impunity surrounding crimes against journalists, the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today urged Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to order a speed-up in the investigation into the murder of the executive editor of the newspaper Gazeta São Fidelís in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro, Aristeu Guida da Silva.
Da Silva was killed on May 12, 1995. He had constantly been reporting in his newspaper on corruption in the São Fidélis municipal government and on the participation of local city commissioners in robberies and in a death squad. The presumed mastermind of the murder was subsequently killed. One defendant convicted in the murder managed to have his conviction overturned and now faces a new trial. Two others allegedly involved remain at large.
For three years now, through ads published in more than 350 newspapers throughout the Americas, the IAPA has been inviting readers to go to its Web site http://www.impunidad.com and join its campaign “Let’s Put an End to Impunity” in crimes against journalists.
The campaign, which also includes radio spots broadcast throughout the hemisphere, placed through the International Association of Broadcasting (IAB), is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
