(IAPA/IFEX) – The following is a 25 August 2000 IAPA press release:
Miami (25 August 2000) – Inter American Press Association President Tony Pederson announced today that next week he will head an international mission of newspaper publishers to Peru to meet with President Alberto Fujimori and raise concerns about threats to press freedom in the country.
The IAPA delegation, which will be in Lima from August 27 to 29, is going at the behest of the hemispheric free press organization’s Board of Directors, further to a decision at its meeting in Mexico in March.
In addition to meeting with Fujimori, the group will also hold talks with: Alejandro Toledo, the unsuccessful candidate in the recent presidential elections; ombudsman Jorge Santiestevan; government officials; and representatives of local press organizations and news media.
In addition to Pederson, from the Houston Chronicle, Houston, Texas, the IAPA delegation will consist of: IAPA’s First Vice President Danilo Arbilla, from the weekly Búsqueda, Montevideo, Uruguay; Press and Information Freedom Committee Chairman Rafael Molina, from Ahora, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Former President Jorge E. Fascetto, from El Día, La Plata, Argentina; former President Edward Seaton, from Seaton Newspapers, Manhattan, Kansas; Executive Director Julio E. Muñoz; and Press Freedom Coordinator Ricardo Trotti.
