(IAPA/IFEX) – MIAMI, Florida (September 28, 2009) – The Inter American Press Association (IAPA), in an ad published today in more than 400 newspapers throughout the Americas, deplored the delay and silence regarding investigations into the August 13, 1999 murder of Colombian journalist Jaime Garzón.
The radio commentator and humorist for Caracol TV television channel was shot to death by hitmen on a motorcycle as he was going to work at the Radionet radio station in downtown Bogotá.
The testimony of several people indicated that paramilitaries and security agents may have been linked to the crime, but to date there has been no indication as to who actually carried out the murder. Now 10 years later no one has paid for Garzón’s death.
The IAPA, with funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is waging a hemisphere-wide campaign to create awareness of the need to solve unpunished murders of journalists. In the last 22 years a total of 360 journalists have been killed in the Americas. Through ads published in newspapers throughout the western hemisphere readers are invited to join our campaign “Let’s Put an End to Impunity” by going to the Web site http://www.impunidad.com .
