IAPA launches the Tenth National Forum on the Chapultepec Declaration in El Salvador
Miami (23 August 2000) – In El Salvador today, the Inter American Press Association launched its yearly national forum to promote the Chapultepec Declaration in the Americas. The Declaration is a document containing the fundamental principles necessary for freedom of expression and the press.
The Tenth National Forum on the Chapultepec Declaration takes place from 23 to 25 August in San Salvador, capital of El Salvador, as a continuation of the ongoing efforts of IAPA to bring attention to the decalogue of freedom of expression. The purpose of IAPA’s visit is to suggest legal changes to promote freedom of expression, using the Chapultepec Declaration as the basis for discussion.
As part of its activities, on Wednesday the IAPA delegation will hold meetings with editors of national newspapers, political leaders, members of congress, representatives from journalists’ and human rights organisations, leaders of political parties and judges from the Supreme Court. On Thursday 24 August, the organisation will meet with President Francisco Flores, and the president of the Supreme Court of Justice, García Calderon.
The closing of the Salvadorian National Forum wil take place in the David J. Guzmán Museum on Friday 25 August, when IAPA will hold a conference on the Chapultepec Declaration and a panel discussion entitled, “The Chapultepec Declaration and Press Freedom in El Salvador”, which will be moderated by Enrique Altamirano, director of the “El Diario de Hoy” newspaper.
