IAPA WILL HOLD CONFERENCE ON FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION AND INAUGURATES NEW DUBOIS BUILDING
Miami (July 19, 2000). – The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) will hold a conference on “The Inter-American Declaration on Freedom of Expression” on Thursday, July 27, 2000 and will inaugurate the Jules Dubois Building, IAPA’s new headquarters, with the attendance of former presidents Violeta Chamorro of Nicaragua and Julio María Sanguinetti of Uruguay.
During the day-long conference, a panel will study and discuss the restrictions on press freedom in the Western Hemisphere and will make a comparative analysis with the fundamental aspects of the Declaration of Chapultepec, which contains ten principles necessary for a free press.
A second panel will focus on the challenges to press freedom and then will address some matters of the impunity project and the immediate response group, which have been promoted by the IAPA. The final panel will look at the issue of professionalism in journalism education in the fight for freedom of expression.
The Uruguayan ex-president Sanguinetti will be speaking during the luncheon on the most compelling matters regarding free speech and free press.
The Jules Dubois Building, where the new offices will be, is to be inaugurated in the evening of July 27th. Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas and Mayor Joe Carollo of the City of Miami will participate in the official ceremony and reception among other community leaders as well as IAPA members and friends of all parts of the world. Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Wenski will impart his blessing on the new headquarters.
The IAPA’s new offices are located in the Brickell area of downtown Miami at 1801 S.W. 3rd Avenue, Miami, Florida 33129. The building has been named after Jules Dubois – Latin American correspondent for the Chicago Tribune during the middle part of the century and early member of the IAPA. He was Chairman of the Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information for 15 years (1950-1965).
Thanks to the generosity of the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation, the building purchased will hold a Boardroom, a library and an auditorium where a variety of activities of the organization will take place.
