Organizations committed to the defense of democracy and human rights in Latin America and the Caribbean are denouncing a new anonymous threat on 19 April 2013, against the head and staff of the Office for Mexico and Central America of ARTICLE 19.
IFEX-ALC organizations denounce the continuing climate of violence and threats against freedom of expression in Mexico and requests the Mexican government to fulfill its commitments to ensure security for the free exercise of journalism.
Organizations committed to the defense of democracy and human rights in Latin America and the Caribbean are denouncing the occurrence of a new anonymous threat on April 19th 2013, against the head and staff of the Office for Mexico and Central America of ARTICLE 19.
IFEX-ALC reports that this is not the first time that ARTICLE 19 has received a threat due to its work defending freedom of expression in a climate of violence against journalists and human rights defenders in Mexico.
The IFEX-ALC regional report on the situation of impunity and regional insecurity shows that many of the threats and attacks against media and journalists in Mexico go unreported out of fear of reprisals and/or mistrust of the role of the authorities that is reflected in a high level of impunity.
In that sense, the IFEX-ALC organizations demand the Mexican government to investigate, prosecute and punish threats and attacks, as well as the implementation of measures and effective mechanisms to control violence, and fulfill its commitment to ensure the security of journalists and citizens in general.
Threats against the exercise of press freedom are, basically, an attack on the democratic and constitutional right of all citizens to be informed, inform, express their opinions and make decisions.
