In a letter to Guatemalan Minister of the Interior Rodolfo Mendoza, Robert Ménard, RSF’s secretary-general, “is expressing his strong concern over the assassination of Larry Lee, a Guatemala City correspondent for the business news agency Bridge News.” The organisation asks the minister to “take all necessary measures such that the circumstances and the motive behind Larry Lee’s assassination are made known” and “asks him to keep them informed of developments in the investigation.”
On 28 December 1999, Lee was found dead in his apartment, located in the capital’s centre. He had been knifed a number of times in the throat and abdomen area. Initial investigations suggest that the journalist died between 10 and 24 hours before he was found and that he tried to defend himself before being assassinated.
Lee arrived in Guatemala a year ago. According to his colleagues in the Foreign Press Club, he was planning to relocate to Mexico in upcoming weeks.
