(Periodistas/IFEX) – On Saturday 29 April 2000, journalist María Julia Oliván, of the Día D programme and “XXII” magazine, was insulted and dismissed by the archbishop emeritus for Mercedes-Luján, Monsignor Emilio Ogñenovich. The monsignor further allowed one of his co-workers to assault the journalist.
At the end of a mass held in Mercedes, Oliván approached the prelate to question him about a court case referring to the conditions of children kept in the Jesús de Nazareth Home, which is under the jurisdiction of the archibishop. In front of the Día D camera, Monsignor Ogñenovich was rude to the journalist, accused her of belonging to “a masquerade” and called her “trash”. In an act of veiled intimidation, the monsignor asked one of his assistants to take down the journalist’s name “so that he would be able to testify in court.” Before leaving the church, another of the monsignor’s co-workers assaulted the journalist, who suffered bruises as a result.
PERIODISTAS protested Monsignor Ogñenovich’s attitude and expressed its support for Oliván. “The priest’s slandering remarks and his intolerant attitude led to the physical assault directed at the journalist”, PERIODISTAS stated.
