Edwin Azaña was taking pictures of a scuffle between the vendors and a municipal worker when approximately 200 vendors surrounded him and beat him.
(IPYS/IFEX) – On 16 April 2010, Edwin Azaña, a journalist for the newspaper “Correo”, was attacked by a group of vendors at the La Perla market in the city of Chimbote, northern Peru.
Azaña was taking pictures of the vendors as they attacked a municipal worker when around 200 vendors surrounded the journalist and beat him up.
They also stole his cellular phone and camera. Police officers intervened in the scuffle and the journalist’s possessions were returned to him.
IPYS condemns this as an attack against freedom of information.
