Andrea Romero was assaulted while she was covering a police operation at a market in Quito.
(Fundamedios/IFEX) – On 12 October 2010, Andrea Romero, a reporter for the Teleamazonas television network, was assaulted while she was covering a police operation against vendors of articles of dubious origin at a market in Quito.
The journalist told Fundamedios that she was struck with a stick on the head while she was interviewing one of the vendors, as well as being insulted by other stall keepers who were around her.
The people at the market were upset over the presence of the Judicial Police officers, who confiscated some items, and by the presence of the press.
In spite of the incident involving Romero, the television network was able to broadcast the news story.
