(IFJ/IFEX) – On the night of 25 October 2000, journalist José del Carmen Parraguez Pérez, host of the programme Análisis, broadcast on Radio FVC, in Nueva Cajamarca, was attacked by eight unknown assailants while he was on his way home.
At the time, Parraguez was with Timoteo Flores, a disc-jockey at the radio station. A few days prior to the attack, the journalist had been continually harassed by a group of unknown individuals, who warned him that he should abandon his journalistic work and stop reporting on state corruption, which he has done on a number of occasions during the past year.
After the incident, Parraguez asked the radio station’s owner to accompany him when he went to file a complaint. After the owner refused to do so, the journalist decided to file the complaint the following morning, accompanied by the president of the National Journalists’ Association – Nueva Cajamarca branch (Asociacion Nacional de Periodistas- Filial Nueva Cajamarca), Danilo Bautista Hernández. As of 31 October, no police officer had responded to the journalists’ appeal, and as a result Parraguez opted to use the local media to publicly condemn the attack.
