(IFJ/IFEX) – On Thursday 2 March 2000, photographer Edwin Anyosa, from the daily “La Voz de Ica”, was brutally attacked by municipal worker José Vera Mendoza. At the time of the attack, Anyosa was covering public demonstrations organised by employees of the provincial municipality of Ica. During the course of these demonstrations there have been a series of abusive incidents.
The photographerâs nose was broken as a result of blows dealt by Vera Mendoza, and his camera was lost. He has reported the incident to the National Police, detailing the severe injuries, facial disfigurement and attempted homicide he suffered.
The incident took place at midday, at the gates to the International Grape Harvest Festivalâs grounds. Anyosa explained that just prior to the attack, he had been taking photographs of the strikers, who were on the verge of killing an employee of the municipalityâs Public Relations Office.
