(IPYS/IFEX) – On 16 May 2010, members of the police hit and detained Carlos Delgado, a journalist for the newspaper “El Mercurio”. The incident occured in Manta, western Ecuador.
The reporter photographed a group of policemen, dressed as civilians, as they shot into the air and threw teargas bombs to control a mob.
The policemen noticed what he was doing and demanded that Delgado hand over his camera. The journalist refused to do so, which prompted the policemen to hit him with a metal tube, handcuff him and detain him for more than an hour.
IPYS and Fundamedios condemn this assault and demand that the case be investigated and those responsible sanctioned.
