(IPYS/IFEX) – On Monday 9 April 2001, journalist Nemesio Yoplac Valqui was attacked at 6:50 a.m. (local time) by Antonio Altamirano Delgado. At the time, the journalist was overseeing the transmission of the El Mañanero programme, which broadcasts music and news via Radio Tropicaza, 104.9 FM.
Altamirano burst into the broadcasting booth and attacked Yoplac, throwing him to the ground with a punch. As the microphone was on, the racket and shouts were transmitted on the air, allowing the audience to hear everything. Neighbours and the radio station’s owners arrived shortly afterwards and subdued the attacker.
After the event, Yoplac filed a case with the Soritor National Police and Altamirano was detained.
Altamirano attacked the journalist for reporting that he had been driving drunk through the streets of Soritor (in the San Martín district). According to Yoplac, this information was corroborated by witnesses.
IPYS requested an impartial investigation of the attack by the Office of the Public Prosecutor and punishment for the attacker in accordance with the law.
