(IPYS/IFEX) – Teobaldo Menéndez Fachín, director and host of the radio programme Inédito, broadcast by Station X of Yurimaguas, Department of Loreto, was attacked by and received death threats from two unidentified attackers.

According to a report submitted by Menéndez Fachín to the police station in Yurimaguas, the attack occurred on 26 February 2000 at about 6:05 a.m. (local time). He was on his way to Station X when two individuals intercepted and attacked him. They punched the journalist in the face and kicked him while reprimanding him for his programme’s content, which was critical of the government. After the attack, the assailants fled.

The attackers also demanded that Menéndez Fachín stop criticising congressional candidate Nely Salinas, who is running in the Perú 2000 campaign. Before disappearing they also warned him they would not hesitate to make an attempt on his life.
