(IPYS/IFEX) – Judge Carlos Mendoza Banda, of Arequipa’s Tenth Bench of the Criminal Court, southeastern Peru, has initiated proceedings against journalist Jymmy Salinas Salas, correspondent for America Televisón, for the crime of violence and resisting authority through disobedience.
The complaint against the journalist began when he refused to hand over to prosecutor Frank Rosas Gainsa of the Mariano Melgar justice district the original videotape of a reconstruction of a crime that took place in the area on 17 November 2007. The videotape was broadcast during two América Televisión programmes: the news programme “Primera Edición Arequipa” and “Primera Edición Nacional”.
The oral hearing for the proceedings against Salinas took place on 30 April 2008. The criminal court has not yet issued a verdict or sentence.
IPYS believes the complaint against the journalist to be unjustified and asks the court to dismiss the charges.
