(IPYS/IFEX) – On 5 April 2006, Marilu Gambini, a journalist for the programme “Confidencial” broadcast on TV channel 31, left the country with her two young children after having received another death threat on 28 March. The authorities have not yet identified the source of the threat. Gambini has been threatened and beaten several times because of her investigations into drug trafficking in Chimbote, northwestern Peru.
On 28 March, Gambini received a phone call warning her that she had only one more week to live and that she should worry about her children. This was the third time the journalist received this kind of threat. On 28 March 2005, two strangers entered her home, pushed her around and then destroyed and stole several documents related to an investigation into drug trafficking. On 21 May 2005, she was the victim of a burglary when strangers entered her home and, after looking through her belongings, took several videotapes with them.
On 2 April 2006, the journalist was threatened by an unknown woman in the street; that same night her dog was murdered. Gambini decided to leave the country because the authorities have not investigated the source of the threats.
