(IPYS/IFEX) – On 6 December 2004, Elías Navarro Palomino, editor of the bi-weekly “Línea Roja”, reported that he has been receiving death threats via calls to his mobile phone, in which the caller said, “Your days are numbered.” The journalist has asked the Ayacucho Prefecture, in southeastern Peru, to provide him with protection.
Navarro believes that the threats are coming from individuals with links to Roberto Huaynalaya, the leader of a faction of the Peruvian Teacher’s Union (Sindicato Unitario de Trabajadores en la Educación del Perú, SUTEP). According to the journalist, the threats may be related to an article about a legal action that has been launched against Huaynalaya and several of his supporters.
