(IPYS/IFEX) – On 11 April 2008, “La Republica” newspaper correspondent, Liubomir Fernández, was hit by Lilia Hancco Navarro, wife of Puno’s regional president, Hernán Fuentes, during a march organized by Fuentes against the central government. Puno is located in southeastern Peru.
According to Fernández, he was covering the protest with other reporters, but when he took a picture of Hancco, she kicked him in the leg. When the journalist complained, she head-butted him twice and attempted to seize his camera.
The journalist also stated that Hancco threatened him because of his newspaper’s articles about the alleged irregularities in Fuentes’s administration, and his wife’s meddling in it.
Fernández told IPYS that since the day of the assault he has received constant threats via his cell phone.
