(IFJ/IFEX) – On Sunday 5 March 2000, journalist María Elena Salinas Gallego was found dead in the correctional center, “The Capotal”. The centre is located in the jurisdiction of San Carlos, department of Antioquia. The journalist’s body was found next to two guerilla fighters from the National Liberation Army (Ejército de Liberacion Nacional, ELN) who were killed during a confrontation with army troops.
Salinas was reported missing on Thursday 2 March after she was transferred to the Municipality of San Carlos, to investigate the situation in the department of Antioquia.
The journalist’s body was taken by army troops to San Vicente de Paul Hospital’s morgue and later buried under the initials N.N. in the local cemetery. She was a 1990 graduate of the University of Antioquia. She worked as a professor in the Faculty of Social Communications at the University of Medellín and also for several of the city’s radio programs. This information was transmitted by PRENSA LIBRE.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to the president:
- calling for an immediate investigation of the journalist’s death and to verify how the disappeared journalist ended up in a confrontation between the guerrilla and the army
- asking him to ensure that the body is immediately delivered to her relatives
