(IPYS/IFEX) – On 7 October 2006, journalist Pedro Bastardo was killed by several shots to the head. The murderer got out of a car and fired upon the journalist while he was in a shop in the city of Cumaná, in the state of Sucre, in northeastern Venezuela. According to witnesses, the murderer argued with the victim before killing him. The motive for the crime is not known.
The Office of Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations (Cuerpo de Investigaciones Científicas Penales y Criminalísticas, CICPC) in Sucre believes that the murder may have been the result of a botched robbery, but Bastardo was not robbed of any of his belongings. The victim’s brother, Juan Bastardo, told the media that the journalist usually did not carry large amounts of cash or any valuables.
Bastardo had been working as a journalist in the Municipality of Bolívar, in Cumaná, for the previous eight months.
IPYS will continue investigating the crime in order to establish the motives behind it.
