(IFJ/IFEX) – On Sunday 1 October 2000, journalist Rubén Viejo, reporter for FM Ciudad in the Pico Truncado region, Santa Cruz province, received a death threat from an unknown individual who put a gun to his head and warned him to stop his investigation into the murder of a taxi driver. Were he to ignore the warning, the journalist was advised that he or a member of his family would be assassinated.
At the time, the journalist was investigating the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of the taxi driver, whose body has not been recovered to date. The identity of the assassin is not known.
According to Viejo, the individual who threatened him showed that he was familiar with professional detention techniques by the way in which he delivered the threat.
Viejo filed a complaint denouncing the attack with Judge Cristina Lembeye. He also met with Minister of Government for Santa Cruz province Julio Vido, who ensured him that he would be safe. Santa Cruz Chief of Police Wilfredo Roque also offered to provide the journalist with personal protection.
