(PERIODISTAS/IFEX) – On 9 August 2003, journalist Ulises Caballero, editor of the newspaper “Artículo 14”, received a message on his answering machine threatening his life. Caballero is also part of the programme Radio Rebelde on the FM La Porteña radio station. Both the station and the newspaper are located in Berazategui, Buenos Aires. A male caller left the message at 4:04 a.m. (local time), stating that “you’re dead ? we are going to smash your head to pieces.”
The message did not include any specific reason for the threat. Caballero told PERIODISTAS that he had been reporting on a legal case about irregularities during construction work at the Municipal Hospital in the neighbouring town of Quilmes, and that he had criticised political leaders in the area, but it is not certain that the threatening call is connected to this work.
On 11 August, the journalist reported the incident to a Quilmes court. He also submitted a taped copy of the message and asked the court to order the telephone company to produce a report on the calls made to his number on the day of the threat.
