(C-Libre/IFEX) – 14 September 2011 – Tegucigalpa, Honduras – Journalist Mario Castro Rodriguez has reported that he has received several death threats via text messages. Castro is the director of the news programme “El látigo contra la corrupción” which airs on GLOBO TV.
Castro reports that he has been followed several times by four armed men wearing balaclava masks and driving a white car with tinted windows and no licence plates. He says that as he was on his way home from work one evening, the man in the passenger seat rolled down the window and made a menacing gesture in his direction.
Castro and his brother Edgardo Castro Rodriguez founded the news programme after the June 2009 coup d’etat. It publicizes news of government corruption and human rights violations such as the murders of journalists and peasants in the Bajo Aguan region. The show is also critical of the Honduran security apparatus.
The Castro brothers have been granted precautionary measures by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
