Leonardo León told IPYS-Venezuela that he believes the threats and insults came in the aftermath of his radio program where he denounced the illegal situation of university workers, as well as the coverage of University Councils.
(IPYS-Venezuela/IFEX) – On June 3, 2012, Leonardo León, journalist and press coordinator of “ULA 107.7 FM”, a regional radio station from the state of Merida, was insulted and received death threats as he covered an council meeting at the Universidad de los Andes. This took place in the state of Merida, 800 kms west of Caracas.
León told IPYS-Venezuela that he believes the threats and insults came in the aftermath of his radio program where he denounced the illegal situation of university workers, as well as the coverage of University Councils where such situations were discussed, and their relation to the passing of the new law on labor.
León told IPYS-Venezuela that he went to the parking lot to pick up his working tools when some representatives of the union, namely Mario Chacon, the Secretary General; and Guillermo Quintero, the Secretary, came after him. They started to bully him and said that they would kill him.
León said that on June 4 he was airing another meeting and Guillermo Quintero requested university authorities to limit his access to information on his radio program and social networks.
