(FLIP/IFEX) – On 29 April 2005 journalist Emiro Goyeneche returned to his home in the town of Saravena, Arauca in northeastern Colombia. After being imprisoned for 20 months on charges of “rebellion”, he was granted house arrest until the judge hearing his case hands down a verdict.
Goyeneche told FLIP he is worried about the risk he is running by returning to Saravena, saying that while detained a friend told him he had overheard a conversation between two members of a paramilitary group during which they indicated they would murder the journalist as soon as possible.
FLIP has asked the Saravena police to provide protection to guarantee the journalist’s life and physical security.
