(FOPEA /IFEX) – The Argentine Journalism Forum (FOPEA) condemns the serious threat made to journalist Daniel Enz, editor of the weekly “Análisis” in Paraná, Entre Ríos, and a member of the FOPEA Board of Directors.
The intimidating call was made on the morning of 29 April 2009 to the paper’s editorial department and was received by an administrative assistant. The caller asked for Enz, and when told that he was not there, asked to leave the threatening message, which was: “Tell Daniel not to get involved with Alejandro Albornoz. Be careful, it won’t be an accident if anything happens to you. They also said: “I know that he has children, he better take care of them. He doesn’t know what he’s doing. He must be careful when he leaves the radio station. He shouldn’t mess with Alejandro.”
Enz recently published in “Análisis” the results of an investigation that revealed millions in investments made by Alejandro Albornoz, a former member of the Cóndor Financial Administration Management (la Dirección de Administración Financiera del edificio Cóndor) of the Argentinian Air Force in Buenos Aires. In his investigation, Enz made reference to how, recently, the military’s funds had increased, but that this was not in line with their official income. Enz reported the threat to Commissioner Héctor Roberto Massuh, the Entre Ríos chief of police, who ordered protection for the journalist and his family, as well as surveillance of his home and the paper’s offices. The case was to be presented in court on 30 April.
FOPEA supports Daniel Enz and urges the authorities in Entre Ríos province and the city of Paraná to investigate the origin of the threats and ensure that Enz and his family are protected.
