(IPYS/IFEX) – On 21 May 2012, Ramiro Muñoz Terrones, presenter of Radio Cutervo program “Despertar Campesino”, in the city of Cutervo, was shot in the leg by an unidentified person when he was about to begin broadcasting his program. The incident has been linked to his criticism of Raúl Pinedo Vásquez, mayor of the province located in the Cajamarca region of northern Peru.
Muñoz Terrones, who had been threatened a few days earlier by an official who is the mayor’s right hand man, suffered a bad wound on his calf as a result of the shooting, which he says was an attempt to intimidate him. After receiving first aid at a local hospital, he was transferred to the nearby city of Chiclayo where he underwent sugery and is recovering.
Another journalist, Jhon Llatas Delgado, of the web site http://cutervo.com.pe/ , was also threatened. He told IPYS that on 20 May, the deputy mayor of Cutervo, Juan Cubas Quispe, said that he would be attacked for publishing news about Pinedo Vásquez’s administration.
The journalist has complained that although the Prosecutor’s Office has been informed of this, they have not responded to him.
IPYS condems the attacks against these two journalists in Cutervo and requests that the relevant authorities investigate the incidents to determine who is responsible, and that they should provide guarantees that no more attacks will take place.
