(IPYS/IFEX) – At approximately 6:00 a.m. (local time) on 2 September 2004, journalist César Castro Cano, of Radio Líder station, was stabbed twice in the leg by an unknown assailant. The incident occurred in the city of Cusco, capital of Cusco region, southeastern Peru, as Castro was heading to the station.
The assailant, who was wearing a black balaclava, got out of a car and lunged at the journalist with his knife. After stabbing Castro, he fled in the same vehicle.
The journalist was able to reach Antonio Lorena hospital where he received treatment. He later reported the incident to the Cusco regional police chief, Colonel Tedy Bartra Arévalo.
A former Santiago district alderman is among the suspects. Castro had investigated the former alderman’s conduct and accused him of mismanaging municipal affairs.
According to Colonel Bartra Arévalo, a number of journalists will be called in for questioning in the next few days. Castro is recovering in hospital.
