(FLIP/IFEX) – Fernando Marimón, director of the news programme “Mundial”, which airs on Radio Vigía de Todelar station, in Cartagena, northern Colombia, said he has been the target of “political violence.”
On 25 September 2003, while his programme was on the air, Marimón received a telephone call, which was answered by his colleague, Femberto Muñoz López. According to Muñoz, the caller threatened Marimón, saying, “He had better stop talking about this shit. If he does not shut up, we will shut him up.” When the call came in, Marimón was speaking out against an upcoming national referendum and criticising members of congress from Bolívar who support it.
On 25 October, Colombians will vote on the national referendum and, on 26 October, elections for governors, mayors, municipal councillors and local assemblies will take place. FLIP will monitor and promote press freedom during the elections.
