(RSF/IFEX) – In a 12 August 1999 letter to the minister of the interior,
Carlos Corach, Robert Ménard, RSF’s secretary-general, “expresses his
uneasiness over the pressure that a journalist with the “Página 12″
newspaper, Sergio Moreno, has been subjected to.” “(Considering) that the
threats against the journalist constitute an attack against freedom of
expression”, Ménard asks the minister to ensure that the investigation which
was initiated “be meticulously carried out and that those responsible for
the threats be identified and tried.”
Between 18 and 23 July 1999, Moreno, the assistant editor of the “Politics”
section of the “Página 12” newspaper, received seven anonymous telephone
calls. The caller, who “warned” him “to take care of himself”, identified
himself with the pseudonym “Chinese Solís”, in reference to Colonel Solís
who, a number of years ago, began legal proceedings against Moreno for
“defamation”. In an article published on 24 November 1994 in “La Prensa”
newspaper, Moreno and his colleague Silvia Términe suggested that Colonel
Solís was associated with alleged antisemitic sectors which had infiltrated
the State Intelligence Secretariat (Secretária de Inteligencia de Estado,
SIDE). According to the journalists, these sectors had hindered the work of
the judge in charge of the investigation of the July 1994 attack against the
Jewish organisation AMIA. Since 1995, Moreno has been receiving anonymous
telephone calls periodically. In addition, he and his family have been
followed or spied on on various occasions.
