(IPYS/IFEX) – On 20 December 2007, journalist Hernán Lugo Galicia, of “El Nacional” newspaper, told IPYS that he has received about ten e-mail messages containing death threats and accusing him of being part of an international conspiracy against President Hugo Chávez.
The journalist started receiving the threats on 5 December, after President Chávez accused him of being on the payroll of the United States, following an article published by him in which he claimed that the military high command had intervened so that Chávez would agree to the broadcasting of the results of the 2 December referendum on the government’s proposed constitutional reform, which the opposition won.
IPYS condemns the threats and requests that the authorities investigate the case and protect the journalist.
