(IPYS/IFEX) – On 9 November 2006, journalist Olga Brú Polo, of the newspaper “El Meridiano de Sucre”, received a second threat on her mobile phone after publishing reports about irregularities in the municipal government of Sincelejo, capital of the department of Sucre in northern Colombia. The first threat was sent the day before.
The threats follow an attempt to prevent the distribution of an issue of newspaper on 3 October, when unidentified persons bought nearly 60 percent of the issue, sometimes at gunpoint when distributors refused to sell. The objective was apparently to prevent the circulation of news about the detention of four legislative representatives of the department, who have been linked to acts of corruption and the leader of the paramilitary group Bloque Norte de las Autodefensas (see IFEX alert of 10 October 2006).
The journalist has filed a complaint with the police.
