(IPYS/IFEX) – Journalist Gudelia Gálvez Tafur, a reporter and host for Panamericana Televisión’s regional news programme “24 Horas”, reports that since the end of May 2008 she has received threats and been harassed by Áncash’s regional president, César Álvarez Aguilar, and his supporters. The incidents took place in the city of Huaraz, in northwestern Perú.
The journalist told IPYS that she has been harassed, insulted and even pushed around by Álvarez when she has covered events in which he has been involved. On 12 June she was covering a regional strike organised by Álvarez when a group of his sympathizers, who saw her in one of the television station’s vehicles, attempted to overturn it. The demonstrators carried sticks and stones. Gálvez said that since then she has received at least five anonymous phone calls in which she was threatened with assault or even rape. She assumes that these actions are in response to her reporting on allegations of corruption in the regional president’s administration.
Gálvez has requested protection from the Huaraz government, but her requests have not been granted on the pretext that she has not identified her assailants.
