José Eduardo de Andrade Vieira, a former senator and owner of Bamerindus Bank, threatened to dismiss reporter Carina Paccola from the newspaper. Paccola is also the president of the Londrina Association of Journalists.
(IFJ/IFEX) – On 13 June 2000, the National Federation of Journalists (Federacion Nacional de Periodistas, FENAJ) reported an attempt against the Brazilian journalists’ union movement which was perpetrated by the director of the daily “Folha de Londrina”, in Londrina. José Eduardo de Andrade Vieira, a former senator and owner of Bamerindus Bank, threatened to dismiss reporter Carina Paccola from the newspaper. Paccola is also the president of the Londrina Association of Journalists.
The “crime” committed by Paccola was to defend seven other journalists who were dismissed from the daily last week, under the pretense of “cutting costs”. Among the group of journalists is another director of the aforementioned association. For this reason, the human rights section for Latin America of the IFJ has requested that the court reinstate this director. In addition to being threatened with termination, Paccola was prohibited from entering the newspaper’s offices, and her pay was suspended after she met with Vieira on 8 June.

Send appeals to the director of “Folha de Londrina”:
- denouncing these incidents, and demanding the end of threats to Paccola
- calling for the reinstatement of the dismissed journalists
