(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to Colombian Minister of the Interior Nestor Humberto Martínez Neira, RSF “protested the attack against Edgardo Montenegro, of the “El Caleño” daily”. The organisation called on the Colombian minister to “open an inquiry into the incident” and “to please keep RSF informed on the developments (of the inquiry).”
In the evening of 21 January, Montenegro was targetted by two unknown assailants on motorcycles, while he was in front of his home in the city of Cali. The assailants, apparently a man and a woman, shot at him four times. Hit by a bullet, the journalist nevertheless appears to be out of danger, according to his doctors. It is not known whether the assassination attempt was related to Montenegro’s work as a journalist.
RSF recalls that six journalists were assassinated in Colombia during 1999, for their opinions or during the process of doing their work as journalists.
