(IPYS/IFEX) – On 21 May 2006, Panamericana Televisión journalist Janet Mori and “El Comercio” newspaper photographer Enrique Cúneo were assaulted by Daniel Abugattás, recently elected to Congress for the political alliance Unión por el Perú (UPP). The incident occurred as the politician attempted to enter, although he was not invited, the premises where a public debate between presidential candidates Alan García (Alianza Popular Revolucionaria Americana, APRA) and Ollanta Humala Tasso (UPP) was about to take place. While surrounded by a crowd of people, Mori approached the politician to ask him a few questions. Abugattás grabbed the reporter’s hand and snatched her microphone. Cúneo took a photograph of the assault but Abugattás charged against him, pushing the camera into his face.
IPYS condemns this violent reaction which it considers an attack on press freedom and asks the leaders of the UPP to discipline their future congress representative.
