SALTA, ARGENTINA, JANUARY 6 2000
Another attack against journalists, this time perpetrated by a police officer in the Argentine province of Santiago del Estero, was reported today. FATPREN (Federacion Argentina de Trabajadores de Prensa – Argentinean Press Workers Federation), expressed its discontent with the event, describing the incident as follows:
“Yet again the infantry chief of the Santiago del Estero police force, Superintendent Daniel Del Castillo, referred to journalists as “criminals” and attempted to assault a news photographer while the press was covering Del Castillo’s testimony in an extorsion and bribery case. In April of last year, Del Castillo physically and verbally attacked three journalists who were covering an incident which occurred in a toll booth on the highway between the cities of La Banda and Santiago del Estero. This act was duly renounced but was not investigated by the authorities. The Santiago del Estero Press Circle recently announced that ‘if this failure to act and investigate these incidents persists, it would be forced to resort to asking international authorities to ensure that journalists can exercise their profession freely.'”
