(IPYS/IFEX) – On 22 May 2008, Radio Loreto’s programme “Loreto en la Noticia” reporter Juan Carlos Rodríguez Pinchi and other journalists were beaten by a group of policemen when they sought admission to the Maynas prison to check on the state of the prisoners after a police shooting the previous night. The prison is in the city of Iquitos, Loreto region, northeastern Peru.
According to Colonel Jorge Chávez Paredes, the police fired shots during the transfer of Jorge Zapata, the inmates’ general delegate, in order to prevent a riot.
The police beat the journalists with billysticks when they tried to gain admission to the jail in order to interview the prisoners.
Rodríguez Pinchi sustained minor injuries and filed a complaint at the 9 October Police Station.
