(IPYS/IFEX) – Nancy Villacorta Pérez, host of a news programme broadcast on Radio 10, and her colleague Armando Murrieta, reported that certain pamphlets have been circulating which contain comments alluding to their private lives, insults and slander. According to Mary Pérez Cora, IPYS correspondent in Iquitos, the insults began around 18 May 2000.
Pérez Cora reported that the journalists feel that Edwin Floret, an individual linked to the government, is behind the insults. Villacorta further noted that she has been insulted and threatened by retired commander Mendo Alcalde, coordinator of the Perú 2000 campaign in Loreto.
Villacorta informed IPYS that she has been systematically threatened over the telephone and that she receives calls at all hours of the night urging her to stop speaking out against President Alberto Fujimori. Furthermore, unknown individuals who appear to be connected to the military keep a constant watch on her house. The educational centre where she works has received questions about her assistance record and her conduct as a teacher.
The journalist further reported that her thirteen-year-old son was stopped in the street by two individuals who told him that his mother’s life was in danger as she could “have an accident” at any moment.
