(IPYS/IFEX) – On 23 October 2006, journalists Jorge Tello and Segundo Infante of the weekly newspaper “D-Bate”, told IPYS that they have been threatened by members of Piura municipal council candidate José Aguilar’s retinue since they published several articles about the financing of his campaign. The city of Piura is situated in northern Perú.
According to the journalists, the threatening actions began on 6 October, a day before the first accusation against Aguilar’s campaign was published. The offices where the weekly is published were searched by members of the Special Electoral Tribunal (JEE) after Aguilar had filed an accusation stating that “D-Bate” is published with funds provided by the regional government. Tello welcomed the officials and proved the accusation to be false. Aguilar’s complaint was therefore shelved immediately by the JEE.
On 10 and 17 October, after the reports were published for the second time, unidentified individuals covered the printing facility’s printing office’s facade with excrement.
On 20 October, after publishing another report on the same subject, Tello received a phone call warning him that if he did not stop his investigations there would be attacks against him and his family. His wife received a similar phone call on the same day.
