IAPA recalls unpunished murder of Colombian journalist
MIAMI, Florida (May 25) – As part of its hemisphere-wide campaign to raise awareness regarding the need to bring those who murder journalists to justice, IAPA has called on Colombian president Alvaro Uribe to intervene in order to speed up the investigation of the case of journalist Martín La Rotta.
Hit men shot and killed the director of the radio station La Palma Stereo in San Alberto, department of Cesar, on February 7, 2004, after he refused to continue paying extortion money each month to a paramilitary group operating in the area. The murder continues to go unpunished, with no arrests made and the investigation stalled.
Through ads in some 300 publications throughout the Western Hemisphere, the IAPA has been inviting readers to go to the Web site http://www.impunidad.com and join the “End Impunity” campaign regarding the murders of news men and women over the past 15 years.
The IAPA campaign, which is being carried out through the Association’s Committee against Impunity, is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. It includes investigative reporting programs, training for reporters working in danger zones and the monitoring of the state of press freedom in the Americas.
