Kuwaiti detainees imprisoned during protests in October have been released.
(ANHRI/IFEX) – 24 October 2012 – ANHRI expressed relief over the release of Kuwaiti detainees imprisoned due to the events that took place in Kuwait during October.
On the morning of 24 October 2012, a judge decided to release all the stateless detainees, including activists Ahmed Habib Al-Tamimi, the Chairman of the Committee for Kuwaiti’s Bidun, and Nawaf Fahad Al-Bader, secretary of the same organization, in addition to Ali Ghadban Anzi, a member of the committee.
Youssef Marzouk Zafairi and Mohammed Khudair Anzi were released on bail. The prosecutors also decided to release four young men: Abdul Aziz Al-Sadoun, Omar Ariman, Munzer Habib and Mubarak Al-dbdab, all of whom were detained because of their involvement in a 15 October gathering referred to as “Enough Futility”. They each had to pay bail of 1,000 dinars (US$3,555). Former MPs Falah Alswag, Khalid Tahous and Badr Aldahoum, who were accused of violating the constitution, were released on bail of 5,000 dinars each (US$17,773). The case was adjourned till 13 November.
ANHRI said that “although we welcome the release of the detainees, we announce our deep indignation at the continuing prosecution of activists for expressing their opinions or demonstrating peacefully calling for political and social reform.” ANHRI demands that all charges related to the activists be dropped.
ANHRI also “renewed its calls for the immediate release of all prisoners of conscience in Kuwait.”
