Rodrigo Rangel was threatened and assaulted when he was interviewing lobbyist Júlio Fróes for a report about favours he receives from the Ministry of Agriculture.
(IPYS/IFEX) – On 4 August 2011, Rodrigo Rangel, a reporter and editor for “Veja” magazine, was threatened and assaulted by lobbyist Júlio Fróes in a restaurant in Brasília, the capital of Brasil.
According to “Veja”, Rangel was interviewing Fróes for a report about favours he receives from the Ministry of Agriculture and about how he manipulates bidding processes and bribes public officials. After half an hour, Fróes threatened Rangel, then pushed him against a table, breaking one of his teeth, and took his notebook from him.
Rangel is a renowned journalist. He came in second place in the 2010 Latin American Investigative Journalism Award granted by IPYS and Transparency International for an investigation entitled “El Caso Sarney”, published in the “Estado de São Paulo” newspaper and produced in collaboration with Rosa Costa and Leandro Colón.
