The workshop is part of a series that will be convened in the West Bank and Gaza Strip as part of a project on defending journalists' rights in Palestine.
(MADA/IFEX) – 4 July 2010 – The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) recently held a workshop on “Freedom of expression in international and Palestinian legislation” at the Ritno hotel in Ramallah city.
The workshop, which was attended by a group of journalists, lasted for four hours. Mr. Jihad Harb provided the training, which aimed to increase the awareness of journalists on principles of human rights in general and international and Palestinian legislation relating to freedom of expression, particularly Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Palestinian basic law. In addition, mechanisms of journalist protection were covered.
MADA’s director, Mousa Rimawi, said the workshop was part of a series that will be convened in the upcoming months in the West Bank and Gaza Strip as part of a project on “Defending Journalists’ Rights in Palestine”, which is funded by the Foundation for the Future. Rimawi added that last May, MADA began providing legal advice for journalists and follow-up on cases concerning freedom of opinion and expression.
The participants emphasized the importance of implementing Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as the Palestinian Amended Basic Law, which guarantee freedom of expression to journalists and other citizens. They also agreed on the importance of the role of local, regional and international media organizations in protecting journalists and they stressed the need for a strong syndicate that works to embrace all journalists, defending their rights and protecting them.
